Tread Automotive is an independent publication about cars and the world around them, written for people who love cars and want writing about them they can trust. We cover the state of the industry, individual cars worth thinking about, the craft of how they are made, and the culture we all share as enthusiasts.
Most motoring coverage is paid for, one way or another, by the industry it covers, and you can usually feel it when you read it. Tread exists to be the other thing: a publication that answers to its readers and to the work, not to a manufacturer's marketing calendar. No one buys our opinion. We keep that structural rather than promised, because a promise is only as good as the next invitation, and we would rather not depend on those.
Our editorial is written under the name Guy Varrick. Guy is a pen name, a disclosed editorial voice for the publication, not a real person whose life we have invented. The name gives the writing one consistent point of view: opinionated, precise, and willing to be wrong in public. Where Guy gets something wrong, we say so and correct it openly.
Tread Automotive was founded and is run from Johannesburg by Tai de Wet, and it is built for the long term: for the global community of people who take cars seriously and enjoy them just as much. If that sounds like you, you are in good company.
